Although the city offers many conveniences and excitements, these attractions faded fast once people found themselves confined indoors in small city apartments for long periods.
Of the 8.9 million people who moved during 2020, most migrated from the city to the suburbs. Forecasters believe this trend's bound to continue as work-from-home initiatives become more commonplace and people search for less crowded places to settle down.
Is your family ready to trade the city lights in favor of a bigger home in a less crowded area? Here's what New York's Sound Shore has to offer.
Along with some of the oldest and best towns in Westchester, the Sound Shore offers many wide-open spaces to stretch your legs and clear your mind. You'll find plenty of pretty beaches, inlets, and parks to discover in this part of the world.
These are our top choices for your list:
Glen Island is one of the most popular places in Sound Shore to enjoy boat rides and picnics. About 70 launches per week take off from the launch here and weekends bustle with outdoor enthusiasts lapping up the abundant fresh air.
The lovely crescent-shaped beach offers access to winding pathways that crisscross the island and the Glen Island Harbor Club acts as a plush venue for concerts, parties, and weddings.
A steel bridge links three of these islands where you'll find entertainment galore. There's a dock for fishing, a pavilion, a beach for sunbathing, a fishing dock, and horseshoe courts. The barbecue pits are ideal for getting together with friends on the weekends after a day enjoying the Five Island's attractions. There's an outdoor amphitheater that seats 300 people on the largest island too.
Get back to nature at Otter Creek Preserve, home to over 100 different species of birds and plants. This area's an important nesting ground for various migratory birds and also serves as a natural sea barrier against land erosion. Otter Creek Preserve features pristine wet woodland depressions and a lush deciduous forest with a half-mile walking trail.
You'll find no shortage of family-friendly amusements in Sound Shore, Westchester. Take a look at these favorite attractions for local families, visitors, and those who want to unleash their inner child.
Playland's been a hit with all ages since it opened way back in 1928. It's open from May to September and you'll find loads of adrenalin-pumping rides here, as well as more laid-back activities.
No trip to Playland's complete without a ride on the Dragon Coaster or a trip to Kiddyland where smaller children can hop aboard safe, low-key rides. If you're not a fan of amusement park rides, you can still have fun playing mini-golf, taking a dip in one of the pools, or lazing on the beach. The park also hosts regular events, like concerts and fireworks displays.
Everybody loves a little Lego, right? Head across the county to this Westchester attraction ideal for children aged between three and ten. A New York City skyline built from over 1 million bricks dominates the display and children can amuse themselves for hours testing their building skills against the 'Earthquake Tables', or learning the ropes in the soft-play area.
There are also kiddies' rides, a 4-D cinema, and a demo about how Lego's made.
Just north of the Sound Shore, you’ll find another one of Westchester's longest-established attractions, the County Center which is the home of entertainment in the area. When the circus comes to town, it puts on its shows here, and this venue is also popular for theatre shows, concerts, and sports events.
Three professional sports teams call this place home, namely the Westchester Knicks, the New York Streets, and the WNBA's New York Liberty.
Everybody needs a break from cooking every once and a while. Sound Shore towns abound with quaint eateries, 9 elegant Michelin-starred restaurants, breweries, a micro-winery, and convenient fast-food outlets. Be sure to try these out:
